Filipino designer Puey Quiñones’ dress will soon be on display at the at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He is the second Filipino to be featured in the museum’s fashion and costume exhibit.
Sharon Takeda, senior curator and head of the LACMA’s Department of Costumes and Textiles, purchased Quiñones’ mini dress with draped pouf sleeves from his summer fashion show held last year. “I am thrilled to be part of LACMA’s historic collection,” said Quiñones in a press release. “The idea of having my work preserved alongside greats such as Christian Dior, Madame Grès and Alexander McQueen gives me goosebumps. I am so grateful that it happened during my lifetime.”
Last year, Quiñones presented his new collection in Los Angeles and reopened his showroom in Makati. E! News host Zuri Hall also wore one of his pieces at the 2019 Met Gala. These came eight years after a “re-tagging scandal” cost him his clients and his motivation to design new pieces.
In an interview with Preen.ph last year, Quiñones said he was looking to re-establish his clientele and namesake brand.”I have already learned from my past and I would like to leave it behind. I have faced the consequences from my mistakes before and I believe in second chances like how I forgive people who wronged me.”
“As long as I am happy and not hurting anyone, then I know I am doing the right thing. I know reputation is very important, but it is also important to move on,”said Quiñones.
Travelers and LA residents might have to wait patiently before they could see Quiñones’ dress displayed at LACMA though. The museum is temporarily closed in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the US.
Nonetheless, we’d like to congratulate the designer for this milestone!
