Harper’s Bazaar Singapore just announced that Emma Watson is Kering’s new chair of the sustainability committee of their board of directors. Kering is the second biggest luxury group in the world that owns Gucci, YSL, Alexander McQueen and more.
According to the group’s Instagram post, Watson’s appointment to the board of the directors was approved by Kering’s shareholders at their annual general meeting. She is joined by Chinese business executive Jean Liu and former Prudential CEO Tidjane Thiam, with the latter being appointed as the chair of the audit committee.
“Their respective knowledge and competence, the multiplicity of their backgrounds and perspectives will be invaluable additions to the reflections of Kering’s Board of Directors. The collective intelligence that comes from the diversity of point of views and the richness brought by different experiences are crucial to the future of our organization, and I am proud to add such impressive talents to the team,” Kering chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault wrote.
In the past, Watson has advocated for sustainable fashion, with her wearing and promoting sustainable labels that come from zero-waste factories. “Fashion is a creative force. It has the power to persuade, to influence, and transform. When fashion truly embraces transparency and sustainability, other spheres will follow. We’re on a journey towards a more sustainable future,” she told Good On You, an ethical fashion resource that rates fashion brands on their sustainability and labor practices, as well as their use of animal products. Sustainability isn’t the only cause that Watson supports; she’s a UN Women Goodwill ambassador and she launched herHeforShe initiative to promote gender equality
