On Oct. 3, Francis Libiran revealed his newest creations in downtown Los Angeles for LA Fashion Week. More akin to wearable art pieces, his Spring/Summer 2023 collection has a touch of Grecian culture, art deco, and modern art—and this is true of the runway itself.
“I am very much exhilarated and euphoric to have accomplished this show seeing all of my hard work come to fruition. As the designs graced the runway with all the lights and stuff, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. Truly, having no bias, this is one of the best shows I have ever enjoyed, and for that, I am honored and over the moon,” Libiran says about the show in a press release.
Titled “MOSAIC: A Collection of Textiles and Pleasures,” the collection invokes the tactile senses, tempting “the artistic mind, intricate mosaics, and beautiful human connection of sexual passions and intimacy.”
His signature art deco embroidery is on full display throughout the collection. Take the blue men’s ensemble, which becomes see-through because of the geometric embroidery pattern. “The see-through fabric used in the body adds a hint of sensuality and mystery complemented by the art deco pattern elevating the look,” says the press release.
There’s also a pink see-through number that looks vaguely like a modern traje de mestiza, with a small coat resembling a pañuelo over a straight line dress.
Another pink two-piece coord, this time a bralette and shorts, looks set to be on the wardrobes of TikTok fashion girlies.
“I really wanted to still convey my identity by incorporating the styles I am known for with my interpretation of art. On the other hand, of course, I also tried and experimented with a lot of things—colors, fabrics—to give much more edge to this collection,” Francis said.
