What’s It Like to Explore Tessa Prieto-Valdes’ Elaborate Closet

If there is one fashion collection that will constantly intrigue stylish people, it’s that of Tessa Prieto-Valdes, and with Wildflower, people were able to get glimpse of her closet.

Wildflower: A Fashion Retrospective is an exhibit of 30 pieces from Tessa’s collection from different Filipino designers in line with SM Supermalls’ 30th anniversary and Women’s Month.

From the black and white sequined creations of Lesley Mobo and Ivar Aseron to the romantic frocks of Dennis Lustico, Cherry Veric, and Maureen Disini to the interestingly cut pieces of Francis Libiran, Eric Pineda, and Michael Cinco, Tessa’s collection doubles as a celebration of the different aspects of Filipino creativity when it comes to fashion.

Though Tessa’s bubbly and larger-than-life personality becomes the starting point of these designers to create one-of-a-kind pieces, it was quite surprising to find that Tessa doesn’t meddle with the artistic process or impose a certain design.

“If ever I design something it would be too simple. Whenever I see a designer do something too simple, I freak out,” Tessa says. “I am really into innovation and maximizing designers. I want the creations [of the designer] to be an expression of their personality.”

Amid multi-colored dresses from Rajo Laurel and Jojie Lauren, a white gown with an embellishment of a jeepney from Cary Santiago, to the regal frocks from Albert Andrada, Eric Pineda, and Rhett Eala, the exhibit revealed the multi-faceted inspirations of each Filipino designer and the vastness of their skills. “It’s such an awesome display of Filipino talent and design,” relates Tessa. “Seeing these pieces reminds me again why I loved them and each of them come with a certain memory as well.” Some of the pieces showcase the works of the designers who Tessa has worked with for the Red Charity Gala, an annual fundraiser she stages with friend Kaye Tinga that always includes a fashion show from one top Filipino fashion designer. Others are creations from Tessa’s favorite designers who have become her friends through the years. All of which show off different sides of Tessa and what our local designers can do given the right muse.
