The days of heteronormative dressing appear to be numbered. The other day, we announced retail behemoth Zara’s decision to release a gender-neutral fashion line, and today comes the news that Will Smith’s son Jaden took the front row of Louis Vuitton’s fall/winter 2016 show in Paris Fashion Week wearing a jacket from their women’s collection.
His appearance at the show wearing a women’s jacket with the damier pattern on it comes as no surprise as he was selected by creative director Nicolas Ghesquière himself to appear in LV’s spring/summer 2016 campaign. In it, he caused quite a stir as he wore—no, rocked—a skirt, a woven top with tassels, topped off with a leather moto jacket, effectively upstaging the other models in the frame.
Gender fluidity isn’t just a huge trend in fashion, but also in the beauty industry now with Calvin Klein releasing CK2, their first genderless fragrance, and pop star Ariana Grande being the first celebrity to release a gender-inclusive scent named after her brother Frankie.
Time will only tell if this is a passing fad or a genuinely progressive step towards a more inclusive society. But we’re holding out hope for the latter. After all, it’s not just gender binaries getting more attention these days—women have also been big winners in mass media lately with plus-size models being celebrated in magazines like Ebony and Sports Illustrated, and retailer H&M showcasing diversity on the runway with curvy models alongside trans models.
If this is what the future looks like, we’re looking ahead with our arms outstretched.
