Oh, No: Restaurants and Cafés May Be Serving Cancer-Causing Hot Beverages

We’ve got some good news and bad news for you this morning. Good news: the World Health Organization (WHO) doesn’t consider coffee as a carcinogenic anymore.  Bad news is that high-temperature drinks which are usually bought in restaurants and cafés may increase your risk of cancer.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a study has found that consuming drinks which are more than 149 degrees Fahrenheit will increase your risk of esophageal cancer.

Eater then relates that restaurants and cafés would usually serve coffee or tea that are at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although the IARC is still doing further research on this matter, it’s still better to be safe than sorry. (Plus, burning your tongue isn’t fun either.)

So yes, you better let that Americano cool down for a bit. Or better yet, order an iced latte.
