Legendary fashion photographer Bill Cunningham passed away yesterday after being reported to have suffered a stroke.
Bill is well-known in the fashion industry for his great eye for style and passion for his job—he would always be seen riding his bike and sporting his famous (easy to spot) blue jacket. He’s a regular during fashion shows, events, and on the streets where he photographs most of his subjects.
He received a number of recognitions such as the Officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, he was named a living landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy, and even had a documentary about his life released in 2011 called Bill Cunningham New York.
Even though he has gained a celebrity status, he would still shy away from the spotlight and be a photographer who would rather observe than be observed.
Simple and passionate until his dying breath. Rest in peace, Mr. Cunningham. You are already missed.
