The late fashion photographer Bill Cunningham was known to take street style shots during fashion events, or whenever he bikes to his favorite New York corner―57th Street and 5th Avenue. And just a few hours ago, the said corner was named after Bill, albeit temporary.
New York city officials gathered at the said spot and installed a “Bill Cunningham Corner” sign to commemorate the late photographer. “Bill Cunningham saw the style and beauty of all of our city’s citizens, capturing the looks of fashion models and bankers, grandmothers and college students with his vivid photos,” says Chirlane McCray on behalf of her husband, city mayor Bill de Blasio.
This began when Nick Nicholson started a Change.org petition to rename the street corner. It currently has over 6,000 signatures.
However, the renaming isn’t official yet as the sign will be taken down after a week. But Nick tells Gothamist that he’s hopeful that legislative measures will be passed to make it permanent. “We knew that a temporary street naming was a logical first step in the creation of a permanent memorial.”
