Dior finally decided who will replace Raf Simmons who announced his exit about eight months ago. The fashion house appointed Maria Grazia Chiuri as their newest artistic director.
Chief executive of Dior, Sidney Tolenado, said in an interview with Business of Fashion that the first time he met Maria, he already knew she’d get the spot. “She’s very straightforward and a direct person and so, frankly, the first time I met her, I knew that she was the one.”
Maria is the seventh and the first female courtier in the fashion house’s history. Sidney even said that it was part of her appeal, “Because she’s a woman and she has a different perspective on what she is going to do and it played an important part.” He added, “I was looking for somebody that was deeply understanding the needs of a woman of today and tomorrow globally.”
The new creative director will be responsible for haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories. She will also present her first ready-to-wear collection during Paris Fashion Week come September 30 of this year.
Maria Grazia Chiuri was previously the joint creative director at Valentino and before that, she worked at Fendi.
