Stephanie Mark, one half of the duo behind Coveteur, talked about their beginnings in creating an online hotspot which in just five years became a fashion authority. This also comes in line with the release of their first book with co-founder Jake Rosenberg, The Coveteur, Private Spaces, Personal Style, which features 40 closets of the most stylish people around the world. (Wonder if Liz Uy made the cut?)
In an interview with Forbes, Stephanie said that she interned ruthlessly after her stint at the Parsons School of Design, learning about fashion from both the business and creative side. After meeting Jake at a photoshoot, they quickly came up with The Coveteur. The first six photo shoots they posted caused the site to crash almost immediately. A good sign that they were on to something big.
They moved the headquarters to New York from Toronto and garnered money from various investors including Drake. Bringing in employees who used to work for publishing powerhouses Conde Nast and Hearst didn’t hurt as well. Two years after first going live, they redesigned the website in 2013 to accommodate ads which now include Hermés and David Yurman.
Their growth is even more an achievement given how social media and online influencers can quickly make trends fizzle out and has cut down blindly an it girl or two before her peak. But all of this is without sacrifice. “It is hard but sometimes I have to say no to a friends’ birthday party because I have to work,” Stephanie shared.
The Coveteur, Private Spaces, Personal Style comes out Oct. 18 and is available for pre-order on Amazon.
