How to Pull Off Glossy Eyelids on a Regular Day

It seems that people are ditching mattes for metallic and gloss—not just with lips, but also eyelids.

You might be skeptical about this because of the idea of putting gloss on your lids. This trend was introduced during New York Fashion Week SS17 last September. I’m not one to follow makeup trends, especially unconventional ones. But when Bustle writer Hatti Rex tried glossy lids for a whole day, it intrigued me.

Eye gloss gives your eyelids a natural sheen which sticks out even when you’re wearing minimal makeup. It’s like you’re dabbing glitter on your lids sans the actual glitter. And just like any gloss, it can come in different colors too. “If you’re doing [glossy eyelids] on a regular day, the key is to apply in sheer layers,” Ryan Wong, MAC events team artist, tells us.

You also have the choice to wear it alone or on top of your usual eye look to make it more metallic-looking. Ryan notes that eye gloss can give a smokey eye “a worn-in, more natural feel.” An example of a glossy smokey eye is how Diane Kendal did that “greased up” look for Baja East SS17.

Meanwhile, if you want an easy everyday look, Ryan has a trick for you. “[First,] apply a sheer layer of neutral-toned eyeshadow all over the lids up to the crease area using a blending eyeshadow brush. [Then] layer it with a thin veil of powder of the same color,” he says.

For the gloss, all you need is a small amount on top of your eyeshadow. Using your ring finger or a flay brush will work just fine. You can create more dimension by swiping on some mascara.
