Hye Won Jang on Being a New York Fashion Week Model

The last time we caught up with Hye Won Jang, she was at the Manila Fashion Festival runway. Now, she just opened Christian Cowan’s show for New York Fashion Week.

In between rehearsals and while waiting for her next schedule, we got to steal a few minutes with the model, who is a staple in Manila’s fashion as part of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP).

How did the opportunity to join NYFW come about?
I got signed to an agency here (VNY Models) in New York and they started sending me to castings for fashion week. For this particular show, I did the pre-casting, then I did the casting. I found out I got the show only a few days before the show day itself!

What were you thinking as you opened the show?
The adrenaline was really pumping while I was walking! Drew Elliot (creative director of Paper Magazine) was hyping us up before we went out. He was filled with so much energy that it was contagious! While I was walking, I really was just enjoying the music. I walked to the beat and was thinking how happy I was for the opportunity as I walked back.

Have you seen other models that got you starstruck?
Yes! In castings, I see so many models that are in lots of worldwide campaigns and high fashion shows! I’ve seen Bhumika Arora, Mona Matsuoka, Tami Williams, and Molly Bair.

What do you do in between waiting for schedules?
I usually walk around, window shop, or [go to the] gym. Usually though my agency will send me a last-minute casting or fitting so I always need to be ready for moments like that!
