This French Fashion Scion Skips Gown, Opts for Jumpsuit for Her Wedding

“I always talked about that day with her,” said Lola Rykiel as she vividly recalls the day she introduced her fiancé to her grandmother, designer Sonia Rykiel. Sonia was then suffering from Parkinson’s Disease and passed away a few weeks later. Sonia’s excitement for her granddaughter’s wedding was apparent as she repeatedly asked, “When am I going to get to do your dress?”

Lola tries on her jumpsuit as styled by Mari David

To celebrate Sonia, Lola asked the artistic director of Sonia Rykiel, Julie de Libran, to design her dresses. She had a civil ceremony at the 6th arrondissement in Paris and a champagne celebration. Julie created a sleeveless crepe sateen jumpsuit with a jacket trimmed with marabou and ostrich feathers. They paired it with platform shoes with fox pom-poms from Madame Rykiel. “I never saw myself in a jumpsuit,” shares Lola. “But I tried it, and it was so original, and I thought my grandmother would approve.”

Jérémie and Lola during their reception

For the dress during the religious ceremony, Julie took inspiration from the off-shoulder sequined shirt that Lola wore when she shared her first kiss with now-husband Jérémie Kanza. Julie then designed a gown featuring a signature Rykiel motif—iridescent white and pale pink stripes worn with satin slippers adorned with feathers, a veil by milliner Gigi Burris, and a diamond choker from Marie-Hélène de Taillac.

Only Lola could’ve worn these looks to both of her civil and religious ceremonies and we’re all pretty sure Sonia is very much pleased—after all, this was the day they were all looking forward to.
