The Meaning Behind Rachel Peters’ National Costume

The national costume competition in any pageant is always a spectacle to see. Beauty queens wear various renditions of their country’s symbols and most of the time, they’re over the top. Miss Universe-Philippines Rachel Peters is no different as she revealed her costume on Instagram.

Rachel wore a head-to-toe gold ensemble inspired by the sarimanok. She had on a sequined one-piece, a train that transforms into wings, and an intricate headpiece designed by Val Taguba. For footwear, she wore knee-high sandals by Jojo Bragais.

The sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people in Mindanao. According to Philippine mythology, it’s originally depicted as a colorful fowl with a fish between its talons. Today, it’s seen as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

Could it be that Rachel chose this costume as a good luck charm for the pageant? Possible.

As of writing, there’s no news yet if there will be another social media vote for the national costume. But starting today, you can now vote for Rachel via the Miss Universe website or by tweeting the hashtags #MissUniverse, #Philippines, and #MissUniversePhilippines.

What do you think of Rachel’s costume? Do you think it’ll come out on top?
