It’s pretty obvious that the sun and exposure to the elements are your skin’s number one enemy. Walk without an umbrella and sunblock, you’ll see the red spots and pores coming through. This effect is tripled when you’re a surfer like Andi Eigenmann. We bumped into her last night at the opening of French outdoor brand Aigle and got to talking about skincare. Andi admits that this is uncharted territory for her. “Skincare is something that is very, very new to me. I started out last week, asking on Facebook what I should put on my face.”
Her sudden interest came more out of necessity than vanity. “I felt that being under the sun all the time has started to give me wrinkles. It made me realize that before it’s too late, I have to do something about it. I don’t even put sunblock [before], now even when I’m in Manila, I put on. [sunblock].” Nonetheless, she had a lot of information on hand about her new interest. “I love to Google and read what I see on Pinterest.”
So if you’re like Andi who loves the outdoors but hates what it does to your skin, read onto discover how to curb its bad effects.
What’s your morning routine?
I start out my day with an organic facial wash made with goat’s milk. After that, I put on a toner. It’s from Kiehl’s because it’s also organic and alcohol-free. I heard it’s better for you especially under the sun, you shouldn’t put something on your face that has a lot of chemicals in it. Other than that, I am into The Ordinary products. I use the rose hip seed oil and the Vitamin C serum. I put that on with the moisturizer. I just use St. Ives. I’m not one to spend a lot on products. I just want something that works and [is not] harmful to the environment.
What are the main skin concerns you want to target?
Other than my wrinkles, I felt like my pores get bigger and bigger by the day. It makes me feel that I look old. It’s not just about the wrinkles, but also the quality of your skin. Freckles, I’m fine. I have embraced [them] long ago. But it’s the elasticity that I want to keep.
What are your favorite sunblock brands?
For the city, it’s Glossier. I don’t like it white and thick. When I go surfing, I use Surfyogis. It’s made of zinc and it’s a thick mud pack. I look like a Smurf, but [it’s okay] as long as I am protected.
Do you use anything for your hair?
I just use sea salt spray. My hair is ombré because of the sun. People think I colored it. Yes, my hair is dead and brittle because of the salt water. But I’m fine with it. It’s my island hair. Putting more product will make it worse because it’s going to cook your hair even more.
What’s your nighttime routine?
What I do for the the day, I also do at night. Except for sunblock. I replace the sunblock with a mask. I do a clay mask [like] the Aztec healing clay from Healthy Options. It hurts but it works! I use it with apple cider vinegar. I always make sure I stay organic for myself and [in] my products.
