Give Your Makeup Look a Wakandan Vibe

The highly-anticipated superhero film Black Panther finally premiered last week and the hype is real. When I went to watch it over the long weekend, there were long lines leading up to the ticket booths. Couples, families, and groups of friends couldn’t wait to get their hands on some tickets. Lucky for me, I bought my tickets in advance so no waiting in line for me (just a tip for all you moviegoers).

As I sat through the movie, I kept taking mental notes of the details that stood out like the set design of M’Baku’s “throne room” and the constant drumming sounds as part of the background music. Aside from their costumes, the makeup looks on the female characters were also eye-catching and tied all their looks together. Check out the ladies’ makeup below and what products you can use to try it for yourself. Also, I go into detail about some scenes in the movie so watch out for spoilers.

Shuri

Shuri, Princess of Wakanda is more than just royalty. She is also the chief of technology, which means she comes up with new ways to use vibranium and works on her brother’s gear. During the final battle scene, she traded her lab coat for a warrior outfit paired with white markings on her face. If you want to achieve a similar look, try using a white creamy eyeliner. This one from J.Cat also comes in different colors like purple and gold.

Nakia

Nakia played by Lupita Nyong’o looked stunning throughout the entire film. Even when she was fighting off bad guys. One detail that stood out from her makeup looks were her glossy lips. In one scene, she’s sitting at the edge of a cliff with T’Challa and her lips were shining against the sun. Trade in your matte lipsticks for Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb. This is a universal shade so it will complement all skin colors.

Okoye

For the ladies who watched the film, I’m sure you felt empowered every time you saw the all-female militia headed by general Okoye. Danai Gurira’s character looked fierce with bold eye makeup and a red costume. The eye makeup looked like it was done with black eyeliner that was smudged for a smokey look. This pencil from Eye of Horus has a smudger sponge on the other end for on-the-go application.

Ramonda

Another strong female character in the film was T’Challa’s mother Ramonda played by Angela Bassett. Her white dreadlocks framed her face while a rich brown lip color complemented all of her looks. One shade you can try out is Grunge from Colourpop. It is full coverage and has a matte finish. It’s also enriched with shea butter and vitamin E to keep your lips hydrated.

Shop: Colourpop Lippie Stix in Grunge, Available online.
