Beyoncé will not only grace Vogue‘s upcoming September issue, she also got full control over it.
One of her decisions was to name 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell as the photographer, making him the first ever black photographer to shoot the cover in the publication’s 126 years of existence.
The pop icon is also contractually responsible for the photos and captions inside, which, according to Huffington Post, were in longform that she herself had written.
This move by editor-in-chief Anna Wintour comes as a surprise for most as she is known for asserting complete control over the cover, fashion bible, and even with the selection of the cover models’ outfits. Sources from Huffington Post additionally claimed it would have been unlikely for Wintour to have picked Mitchell as she prefers fashion photographers with more traditional experience.
You can see some of his works through his Instagram account.
Vogue’s September issue is considered the biggest of the year not just because of these historical moves, but also for the persisting rumors that it will be Wintour’s last issue.
