Coach is taking a stand: Fur is not fashionable

For the longest time in history, fur has been a sign of luxury in fashion, but now high-end labels are officially saying no to fur, thanks to advocates’ efforts. The latest one to do so is Coach, who announced that they are officially adopting a 100 percent fur-free policy, and even partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to educate their lead executives for a cruelty-free future. The Humane Society’s CEO and president, Kitty Block, expressed her joy following this news. “The announcement today from a brand as iconic as Coach is the latest indication that fur is just not fashionable. The fur trade kills more than 100 million animals each year, with animals used for fur either trapped in the wild, where they remain in cruel leghold traps for days without food or water, or raised in cramped cages for their entire lives and then killed by electrocution or gassing. Consumers worldwide are saying no to all of that and fashion leaders are following,” she wrote.


The brand, known for its signature bags, gloves, and bags, said it will debut its fur-free line on its Fall 2019 collection.“We understood from our employee population and from our consumers that it was important to them that we take a stand on this issue,” Coach’s chief executive Joshua Schulman told Business of Fashion. “We’re doing it because we believe it’s the right thing to do.”

In the past years, fashion brands have been criticised for its continued use of fur and, and the fact that labels are now taking a stand and are committed to go cruelty-free is a win for us. Coach now joins the list of other luxury labels who have adopted a similar policy in recent years, like Burberry, Versace, Michael Kors, and Gucci.
