The fashion world is mourning the death of Philippe Charriol, founder of luxury watch and jewelry brand Charriol. The designer was killed in a car accident at the Le Castellet racing track in southeast France on Feb. 27 (France time). He was 77 years old.
Circuit director Stephane Clair confirmed the death and detailed that Philippe had been racing on the Circuit Paul Richard. “Philippe Charriol was the victim of an accident on the Mistral straight,” he said.
Philippe received emergency treatment on the track before he was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
Philippe Charriol founded his namesake brand in 1983. According to Inquirer.net, he’s also a frequent visitor in the Philippines since 1972, when he was still the top regional executive of Cartier. He reportedly frequented Boracay and shared with the outlet in a 2017 interview that one of his hobbies was car racing.
Philippe was close with the Tantoco family of Rustan’s and SSI Group. Rustan’s chairman Zenaida Tantoco told Inquirer Lifestyle editor Thelma San Juan that their family is saddened by the tragedy. “And with the Rustan’s and SSI family, many of whom have worked with him through the years, we mourn his passing and extend our condolences to his kin in this hour of bereavement,” she said.
