Salves: The healing skin treatment you didn’t know you needed

When it comes to moisturizing, your initial reaction might be to reach for lotion or some sort of cream or even a salve. These are all great but they’re not exactly the same. Sure, salves will hydrate your skin and even hair but that’s not all it can do.

An article on Pronounce digs a little deeper. “They are simple, natural, and non-toxic medications that are easy to travel with and can be used for a wide variety of skin issues. Most will be made with an herbal-infused oil.” That being said, salves have topical healing properties. Depending on the mix of ingredients, they can be used for soothing sensitive skin. For example, if you have insect bites, allergic reactions, or inflammation, some salves can be used as quick and easy remedies—something simple lotions can’t do. Of course, if the problem is extreme, it is best to pay a visit to your dermatologist.

For the product itself, “They are made with oils and waxes to create a semi-solid material. To keep them shelf stable and thick, there typically isn’t any liquid content, except when a small amount of tincture is added.” Common ingredients found in salves are beeswax, coconut oil, and calendula.

Before we get into the list of salves you can buy, here are some things you can use it for:

– Chapped lips
– Sunburns
– Eczema
– Cuts and scrapes

Burt’s Bees Miracle Salve

Leave it to Burt’s Bees to give us a product that is multi-functional and works well. This salve can be used for your hair and skin. All you have to do is warm up a small amount in your hands and apply it to the desired areas like dry ends of your hair. The ingredients include pumpkin seed oil, olive oil, bee pollen, and beeswax. Your body will thank you later. Available at Beauty Bar branches.

Kiehl’s Centella Recovery Skin Salve

The recovery skin salve doesn’t just moisturize the skin. It can also be used on irritated skin. Apply this, for example, after a microdermabrasion treatment. You will notice that your sensitive skin will feel soothed and hydrated. Available at Greenbelt 5.

Human Nature Hand & Foot Salve

Our hands and feet can suffer the most because of constant use and washing. Cracked heels are more common than you think. Give them a treat with this eucalyptus scent. These are also antioxidants that target stressed skin, making them more healthy. Available at Rustan’s Supermarket branches.

VMV Hypoallergenics Red Better Calm-The-Heck Down Balm

I have very sensitive skin so I’ve experienced allergic reactions, redness, and flare ups. For those of you who experience the same thing, use this salve from VMV. It can help with redness and inflammation as well. It is made without any fragrance, parabens, and preservatives. Something to test out if you have “quickly-triggered skin.” Available at Power Plant Mall.

Amihan Organics Healing Salve

Including this one on the list because it is all-natural and eco-friendly. Made with beeswax, it can act as an antiseptic and soothe skin if you have psoriasis and eczema. Lavender can calm the body and help with inflammation. There is also peppermint, which can be used as a remedy for nausea. They weren’t kidding when they called this an “all-purpose salve.” Available online.

Neal’s Yard Remedies Comfrey & Mallow Foot Balm

Sometimes, at the end of the day, all I want is a good foot massage. After being stuffed in my cute shoes the whole day, they need a breather too. When your feet get tired, don’t forget to treat them too. Enriched with almond and wheatgerm, it will soften cracked heels. Comfrey, on the other hand, will have a calming effect. Available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source.

Jar Full of Goodness You’re The Balm! Calendula Salve

This salve is also multi-purpose. It’s mix of essential oils can be used on chapped lips, dry skin, minor burns, insect bites, and skin irritations. It also has healing properties that can help with acne and inflammation. When you’re travelling, this might be the only thing you need to pack in terms of emergency skin needs. Available on Calyxta.
