Did Mak Tumang throw shade at Imee Marcos with this SONA dress?

During the SONA red carpet, Sen. Imee Marcos showed up wearing a yellow dress with a red ombre on the skirt’s hem. She joked to reporters she is a “dilawan” today, referring to thegiven to Aquino supporters. As many Filipinos would know, Marcoses and Aquinos have been rivals since the Martial Law era caused by Imee’s father, dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Many netizens made their own interpretations of the dress, saying it is a good representation of what the Marcoses did to the Philippines: kill several Filipinos to attain their ill-gotten wealth.

Others also praised designer Mak Tumang for allegedly throwing shade at at the senator by making her this gown. You might know Mak as Catriona Gray’s gown designer for Bb. Pilipinas and Miss Universe. However, that wasn’t the case at all.

According to Mak’s latest post on Instagram, the gown, which is named “La Filigrina,” represents the “ever-relevant challenge for all of us to look beyond ‘political’ colors.” He also noted that the sunset-inspired ombre symbolizes the bravery of our forefathers, and how the sun will continue to shine bright and bring hope to our country.

We don’t know about you, but the the word “hope” and the concept of “bayang magiliw” (friendly nation) isn’t exactly synonymous to the Marcoses. Remember that former president and dictator Marcos declared Martial Law which lasted more than a decade and saw the deaths and torture of several political opponents. Imee and the rest of her family have constantly called for Filipinos to forgive and forget, and they have denied of the crimes their family has committed during that time.

But a gown and lighthearted banter won’t erase what the Marcoses did. #NeverForget

What do you think?
