Last night’s ABS-CBN Ball brought out the creativity of local designers in reimagining the Filipiniana for various celebrities. One common theme we noticed were the elaborate butterfly sleeves from the ladies’ terno-inspired ensembles.
The terno dress has been around since the Spanish colonial period. According to Vinta Gallery, its origins came from the traditional baro’t saya, which consists of a skirt and camisa. In the 1920s, butterfly sleeves were incorporated onto the camisa.
Then in the 1940s, Ramon Valera created the terno dress with butterfly sleeves. The piece which is now considered as modern Filipiniana.
That being said, we spotted several stars who rocked butterfly-sleeved ternos with a unique twist.
Maymay Entrata
Maymay’s Furne Amato gown was nude-toned (suited for her morena skin) and bedazzled from the neck down.
Beauty Gonzalez
Beauty wore a gray Cary Santiago dress with a bird detail in the front. The wing also gave the illusion that it’s part of the sleeve.
Ylona Garcia
Ylona was glowing—literally—in her gold Michael Leyva camisa and skirt ensemble. The top had sparkly fringes coming down from the butterfly sleeves.
Iza Calzado
Iza went for a red Rajo Laurel terno gown that had silver filigree details on the butterfly sleeves. Simple yet elegant.
Julia Barretto
Julia’s Rajo Laurel terno gown was all-white, backless, and had hand-painted sampaguitas on the sleeves.
Stephen Robles
The “It’s Showtime” star’s terno had woven details that reminded us of our grandmother’s abaca chair. Even the sleeves looked like it was made by local artisans.
Anne Curtis
Anne arrived in a a purple Mich Dulce terno with oversized sleeves and a layered skirt. She also had on a fascinator made by the designer.
Gretchen Ho
Gretchen wore a gray top with butterfly sleeves and skirt by Rosenthal Tee. The ensemble had white beading details, and the top showed off her collarbones.
Leila Alcasid
A train attached to butterfly sleeves? Vania Romoff made it happen for Leila’s pleated piña gown.
Maris Racal
Instead of a traditional butterfly sleeve, Maris had petal-like sleeves for her orange dress. (Looks like she’s gearing up for pumpkin spice season too.)
