WATCH: Anna Wintour’s state of the Met Gala address

Vogue EIC and Met Gala chairwoman Anna Wintour has addressed the postponement of this year’s event, which was supposed to happen on May 4 (or May 5, Philippine time).

Wintour started her message by saying that every first Monday of May, she would be seen welcoming guests at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But this year, she’s staying at home and supporting designers through a fundraising initiative.

“This is a time of grief and hardship for millions, and a postponement of a party is nothing in comparison,” said Wintour. “And yet one thing that we have learned through this difficult time is that we need each other, that community is essential to who we are. If we are to come out of this pandemic stronger and more resilient, we must emerged from this connected than ever before.”

Since the Met Gala makes up most of The Met’s funding, Wintour shared that people can donate to the museum to help sustain it. She also talked about A Common Thread, a “fashion fund for COVID-19 relief” drive set up by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue, to help designers who are struggling during the pandemic.

This year’s gala was supposed to have the theme “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” The event may be postponed, but the exhibit, which will feature fashion pieces from 1870 to 2020 specially curated by Andrew Bolton, will open in October.

Wintour ended her message by introducing special musical guest Florence Welch, who performed a quarantine version of “You’ve Got the Love.” USA Today reported that Virgil Abloh also had a special DJ set as part of Vogue’s “A Moment With the Met” special.
