A month after Britney Spears and Sam Asghari announced that they were expecting a baby, Spears revealed on May 14 that she suffered from a miscarriage.
“We have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy,” she said on Instagram. “Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however we were overly excited to share the good news.”
When to announce your pregnancy is a tricky subject for expectant parents, maybe even more when you’re in the public eye. “Choosing when to announce a pregnancy isn’t as simple as it may seem, due to the potential of complications, especially during early pregnancy,” writes Forbes. Miscarriages are unfortunately common, especially earlier in pregnancy. Because of this, many women announce it when they’re at the end of their first trimester, as the rate of miscarriages drops after 12 weeks.
However, as Insider notes, there are some factors that contribute to why some parents choose to announce earlier on. You can “establish support” from your friends and family, both in helping you prepare for the baby as well as comforting you should a miscarriage occur, as well as allow for work adjustments.
You can’t ignore that in Spears’ case, there was ample reason why she would’ve wanted that extra support. She had just been freed from her conservatorship when she announced her pregnancy. Previously, she had said that she wanted her freedom as her conservatorship, which had control of her reproductive rights, barred her from getting pregnant or getting married.
Pregnancy is also harder for the pop star because of her age. Being pregnant over the age of 35 “increases both miscarriage risk and risk of complications during each trimester,” Insider notes.
Whatever the case is, it’s a “devastating time for any parent,” Spears wrote.
“We will have a miracle soon,” Asghari wrote in the replies.
We’re hoping for all the best for Spears. She deserves it.
