It’s become common in the fashion industry to call for more inclusivity when it comes to different body types, particularly creating clothes that cater to all of them. However, people in the fashion industry often don’t acknowledge it. Tim Gunn wrote in an essay that designers only make clothes that are size 12 at most, even though majority of Americans are size 16. Orange Is the New Black actress Dascha Polanco also raised this point when a high-end brand refused to dress her because they didn’t have her size.
It’s true that fashion should be for all, regardless of what your size is. And local brand Float definitely had this in mind when they added sizes 2XL and 3XL to their current line of swimsuits.
“There is no one single body type,” Gabbie Tatad writes on Float’s Facebook page. “So instead of asking women to fit in a box, we make it our mission to set them free with real, striking, and practical options. Options that allow one to look as great as she feels while she does exactly what she wants, staying as comfortable as she can doing it.”
Float sells an array of one-pieces, bikinis, maillots, and rash guards for the woman who is active but still wants to look good―all of which are now available for plus size women. What’s special about the swimwear is that they altered them to accentuate rather than hide the curves of the body, as well as other areas.
For example, The Miranda has an off-shoulder detail that shows off the collarbones, while you can flatteringly expose your back with The Karla and The Gisele. And then there are pieces like The Clara and The Mariko which have bottoms that perfectly cinch the waist to highlight the hips.
While there are already local brands that are niched to plus size customers, it’s rare that we see swimwear brands push the boundaries and standards of beauty. Float became an outlet for those who can’t find the right swimsuit size anywhere and they gave women the opportunity to express themselves more with their pieces. How’s that for body positivity?
