Puff Out: A Nationwide Smoking Ban Is in the Works

If you’ve always wanted to quit your smoking habit, now is a good time because you may soon have no choice. An executive order banning smoking in all public places is to be signed by President Duterte sometime this month.

Health secretary Paulyn Jean Ubial confirms the report and says that the order will enforce the  existing law being followed in Davao where one cannot smoke indoors nor outdoors. The World Health Organization (WHO) has lauded the city for its observance of strict anti-smoking laws.

After the executive order has been signed, amendments to the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 will also be sought. This will revise the law on designated smoking areas and sale points of cigarettes.

Smoking cigarettes and tobacco, and even just inhaling second-hand smoke have been repeatedly reported to cause health problems, increase susceptibility to various throat and lung diseases, speeds up aging in the skin, among many other bad effects studies have proved through the decades. But when was it ever enough to say “Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health” and ugly photos of cigarette-related problems ever enough? So perhaps the government taking matters into their own hands isn’t so bad at all.
