Let Kelsey Merritt and Olivia Palermo Show You How to Dress for the New Year

Christmas just passed and we’re already gearing up for New Year’s Eve. This means we need to bust out the shimmery outfits and polka dot prints. But we’d like to mix it up a bit this year.

We’re not striking out the traditional sequins and bold accents for the new year. In fact, Us Weekly‘s Monique Meneses says on Red Carpet Daily that they’re still on-trend. Meanwhile, easy-to-wear pieces like velvet slip dresses and cotton sweaters are also go-to’s for your New Year celebration.

On this note, we turn to celebrities and influencers for some inspiration before the ball drops on 2016. You’re sure to find a look whether you’ll celebrate at home or at a party.

Slip dresses
A shiny slip dress is a quick and comfy fashion fix. You can wear layer it on top of a shirt or shirt like what Aryanna Epperson did.

Or just by itself like Kim Kardashian-West to show a little skin. You can also go for a daring route and opt for one that has a slit.

Sweaters and mini skirts
For a night out, go for a mini-skirt and a sweater top like Kelsey Merritt. We suggest you wear red too to keep up with the festivities.

To add more flair to your look, a printed and studded skirt like Aimee Song’s is a good alternative.

Tiny dresses
As mentioned, the traditional sequins and polka-dot details aren’t going away this year. Solenn Heussaff has another way to show off these prints with this black and white cocktail dress with sheer details and ruffles.

Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner wore a sparkly tube dress at a recent party. Finish off any of these looks with strappy heels and you’re set for the night.

Alternate prints
You can also play with other prints like Gabs Gibbs’ leopard-print top. Her red lips and nails, as well as her studded choker complemented this look well.

For a more feminine touch, take cues from Alexa Chung and go for a floral ensemble. Pair with a natural and dewy look.

Go monochrome
If you’re spending New Year’s Eve just at home or at a friend’s, it’s best to keep it casual yet chic by going monochrome. Maggie Wilson-Consunji is wearing an all-black ensemble here with nude heels and a vibrant blue bag.

Meanwhile, an all-white ensemble like this jumpsuit worn by Gigi Hadid is also a good option. Add some sparkle with a pair of pumps or, in Gigi’s case, sneakers.

The off-shoulder trend
Off-shoulder tops are probably one of the biggest trends this year with celebs like Jessica Biel and Jourdan Dunn rocking it last summer.  So might as well wear one for NYE, right? Kimi Juan’s plain top is simple and can be paired with pretty much anything―pinstripe pants, sequined skirts, and so on.

Likewise, Olivia Palermo kept it laidback by pairing her off-shoulder top with ripped jeans and loafers.

Shiny accessories
And we mustn’t forget the accessories. For jewelry, a chunky necklace like Heart Evangelista’s is the perfect statement piece for your NYE outfit.

As for shoes, Red Carpet Daily suggests something with a little sparkle—whether it’s a gradient silver or a crystal encrusted one like Eva Chen’s peep-toe flats.
