Representation is important no matter what medium, be it on-screen or with the toys that kids play with. And if there’s one thing that Fenty Beauty’s 40-shade foundation taught us, it’s how all skin tones and their imperfections should taken into account. This is why artist Kay Black of Kay Customz came out with vitiligo and albino-skinned dolls.
Based on Kay’s posts, all the porcelain dolls are handmade and aim to promote representation among black women. PopSugar also noted that she was inspired by former America’s Next Top Model contestant Winnie Harlow.
The dolls have also caught the attention of celebrities like Tia Mowry and Mike Epps.
As of now, the vitiligo and albino dolls are only available via request. She also accepts orders to customize dolls for women who have these skin conditions.
This is a groundbreaking move, especially after Mattel came out with Barbie dolls of different body sizes and skin tones last year. Here’s hoping that Kay’s dolls make a similar impact and show that women with vitiligo and albinism are beautiful too.
