Inside Maureen Wroblewitz’s Lazy Girl Makeup Beliefs

It’s easy to assume that a lot of people we see onscreen and on social media follow complicated beauty routines. Think of all the different rituals we see and how they vary so much. You can also thank the beauty industry because it is constantly awash with new products.

Maureen Wroblewitz, who’s been busy since winning Asia’s Next Top Model, hasn’t been carried away by the hype. Despite all the demands she’s meeting lately, her makeup and skincare routines are pared down. Though she does admit that it took her a while to figure it out. “Before, my contour would be too harsh,” she says while taking about how she experimented with makeup in her younger days. Just before her #MaureenLovesForMe meet and greet earlier today, we got to be nosey about her beauty basics.

As a kid, how did you get into makeup?

I always loved playing with makeup. I started with kids makeup. I didn’t know how to use it but I would put it on my face and there are photos of me doing makeup. I started doing grown-up makeup when I was 13 or 14. I started with eyeliner, then mascara, and powder.

How did you teach yourself?

I just watched my older sister as she did her makeup. I also watched YouTube videos. That’s when I really got into it.

What’s the first makeup item you bought?

That was eyeliner. It was a colorful one. I bought blue, purple, and black. All the colors but I never used it. [Laughs]

What’s your morning ritual?

In the morning, I don’t use facial wash. I don’t like chemicals on my face. I just start with toner and moisturize right away.

Beauty item you want to splurge on?

I really like highlighter. I like the stick one that’s creamy. I prefer that over liquid because it’s easier to use.

What’s your nighttime routine?

My nighttime routine is simple. I start with a face wash and I never forget toner. It gets everything off. I also use waterproof makeup remover. Then I moisturize, especially under my eyes.

Do you use a face mask?

I tried different masks but sometimes I get lazy because you have to wait and then wash it off. When I really need it or if I get spots, that’s when I use a [clay] mask.

What should always be in your makeup kit?

I always bring my concealer to cover my dark circles. My supporters sometimes say I look tired. I don’t want them to worry so I use a lot of concealer. And then lip balm.

What’s your signature makeup trick?

I use bronzer as my eyeshadow.

What’s your favorite makeup trend?

I like the classic smoky eye. But I also like the Korean look, no makeup and just a tint on your lips especially for editorials. It makes the clothes really stand out. I like the popsicle lips where it’s dark in the center and it fades out.

How do you take care of your hair?

My hair is weird. I mostly use clear shampoo because when I use creamy ones, my hair gets sticky. And then I use conditioner only on the tips. After I shower, when it’s damp, I put a hair oil.

What’s your favorite scent?

Anything floral. I love floral scents.
