Lip trends change depending on the finish that’s seen on everyone. The matte era was replaced with glossy, and the K-beauty hype gave us the popsicle lip. But we’re here to talk about the smudged lip that you may have seen on runways.
This trend was big during London Fashion Week Fall 2017, when makeup artist Val Gallard gave Preen by Thornton Bregazzi’s models messy lips. British Vogue described it as having a “just-snogged” effect. And if you don’t know British slang, snog means making out.
Just like any other makeup look, people want to make the smudged lip more wearable. Because, let’s face it, not everyone wants to look like they just got out of a make-out sesh—except for this Halloween if you want to dress up as Joker. One way you can do it is to buffing out the color and make the edges appear blurry, like what MUA Julius Cabanisas did with Sue Ramirez.
You can do this too in various colors—all you need is a non-matte lipstick and an applicator. For starters, check our picks below.
Maybelline Creamy Mattes in Craving Coral
What I love about the creamy matte formula is that it’s easy to move around when you need to fix the color with a thin lip brush. For this bold red-orange shade, you can start from the middle of your lips and smudge the color with your fingertips until it looks more feathered than matte. It’s like doing a popsicle lip but the color is more pronounced. Available at Watsons stores.
Aprilskin All Day Lip and Cheek Tint Glossy Water
Refinery29 listed down the best smudged lips found on Instagram. Some of them featured red glossy lips with the color bleeding outside of the lips. This effect can be done by layering gloss over lipstick or via an already glossy tint. Aprilskin’s lip and cheek tint allows you to create full and gradient color on your lips with a sheen. What you can do is blur out the color on the edge of your lips using your fingers for that “just-sucked-on-a-red-candy” look. Available on Lazada.
Jill Stuart Lip Blossom Lipstick in Seductive Amaryllis
As Independent suggests, this trend is the best time to use vibrant shades like purples. The best way to go about this is to apply the color on the center of your lip and pat with your finger or a dense lip brush. This’ll give you a slightly messy color that doesn’t spill over the lips. For this, try Jill Stuart’s Lip Blossom Lipstick in Seductive Amaryllis, which is a dark red-violet shade. Available on Sephora PH.
MAC Cosmetics Lipmix in Fuchsia
We had to put a bright pink option here, too. During Topshop Unique show at last year’s LFW, makeup artist Lynsey Alexander used the MAC Lipmix to create a blurred lip that’s “wearable and understated.” Do the same by squeezing a bit of the Lipmix on the back of your hand or a makeup palette, and dip your lip brush in it. Apply on your lip until the color looks soft. Available at SM Megamall.
Drielle Professional Lipstick Brush
If you don’t have a lip brush in your set yet, we suggest you get one, pronto. You can grab this Drielle one which has a flat tip, perfect for spreading product on the lip and making the edges feathered. Available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source.
