Catriona Gray’s national costume had a big hand-painted piece

We’re just days away from Miss Universe 2018 but we have something to keep you excited till then. Last night, the contestants participated in the national costume competition. For some, this is their favorite segment because they get to see the creativity and culture of each country.

According to ABS CBN News, Catriona Gray wanted all parts of the Philippines to be represented. In included a bodysuit featuring Pintados patterns from Visayas, brass accessories and a T’boli headdress from Mindanao, and a huge parol from Luzon.

The costume was designed by Jearson Demavivas who also worked with Carlos Buendia and Jojo Baragais. On Instagram, Jearson showed sketches of the costume as well as more details. “At the back of the Parol is a painting with inscription of the lyrics from ‘Lupang Hinirang.’” The painting also showed “highlighted victories, festivals, events, heroes, and national icons.”
