There’s an intention to change fashion for it to show real diversity and inclusion, but unfortunately, the progress is slow. Models, fashion show regulars, and advocates remain hopeful that proper change will come and when it does, it will be beautiful.
The recent Valentino show is the vision of good things to come in the business of haute couture and fashion in general. There was a total of 39 Black models all dressed up in gorgeous pieces designed by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. And the woman who closed the show is no other than Naomi Campbell. Paper Magazine described her as “the model who paved the way for many Black models in fashion.”
Susie Bubble posted about her experience and described it as sublime. “But what will rightly be the overall takeaway is immense casting, dominated by models of colour, mainly Black, with Naomi closing the show. Not tokenistic. Not a sweeping all-Black gesture. This was a subversion of the norm, so that perhaps we can ALL see it as the new normal.”
Her carousel of photos ended with a video of Naomi crying as he talked and hugged Pierpaolo.
Now we’re crying too!
