Lucy Torres-Gomez has another jewelry line launching tomorrow with Jul B. Dizon. This time, it’s inspired by the kalachuchi, also known as the “temple flower.”
According to Lucy, the inspiration came from the kalachuchi flowers she grew up seeing at her lola Carmen’s Cebu home. “We would tuck it behind one ear during playtime, string and wear them as leis. Incidentally, when Richard [Gomez] became Mayor of Ormoc, we discovered that the kalachuchi is the official flower of Ormoc, and it symbolizes not just beauty, but resilience, for it takes a lot for the flower to even catch fire and start burning,” she said.
Lucy also brought up how resilient the people of Leyte are amid all the natural disasters to hit the region in the past. “Coming from a place often ravaged by natural disasters—mainly because we are geographically vulnerable in Leyte, the kalachuchi is a beautiful reminder of how we have always managed to bounce back stronger, better,” she said.
For the collection, Lucy used aquamarine (which represents her favorite color and birth month), mother of pearl, and diamonds in 18-karat yellow, white, or rose gold. She calls the pieces “a tangible, beautiful reminder you can wear during the best (and even worst!) of times.”
