The rise of the Aubrey Hepburn velvet hair bow

The latest celebrity who’s following the hair bow red carpet trend is Anne Curtis. She recently attended the 2019 FAMAS Awards and was the first female recipient of the FPJ Memorial Award. She wore a black Michael Leyva dress and Audrey Hepburn’s black velvet bow on her hair—yes, the actual one.

Anne got the famous hair accessory from British auction house Christie’s. The hair bow was part of the online sale series in 2018 called “Audrey Hepburn: The Personal Collection Part III.” This included Audrey’s personal mementos like her vintage Givenchy accessories.

It’s safe to say that Audrey Hepburn was one of the more well-known people who sported a velvet hair bow. She is often seen with a low bun or ponytail tied with the accessory in her movies like Funny Face. She’s also worn pieces with bow details made by Hubert de Givenchy, who saw her as one of his muses. The designer seemed to have a penchant for this detail as it’s seen in a lot of his creations.

Before Anne or Aubrey became obsessed with hair bows, let’s go back in time to when these accessories became a go-to. Bustle said that fabric bows were used by both men and women during the 17th and 18th centuries. Love to Know added that most people didn’t leave home without topping their look off with a ribbon of some sort.

Fast forward to recent years, many have started taking notice of the velvet hair bow. Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was one of the reasons people took notice of the accessory again when she wore a J. Crew bow to hold up her low ponytail.

Celebrities like Margot Robbie and Mandy Moore were also on board with the velvet bow trend. The latter even opted for an embellished one.

Fashion houses and brands also had a field day in incorporating bow details on their pieces and beauty looks. This was especially evident during London Fashion Week 2018 when the likes of Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, and Delpozo showcased their collections.

Harper’s Bazaar also noted how Claire Waight Keller designed oversized bows for Givenchy’s couture runway show. This came on the heels of Kate’s obsession with velvet hair bows.

Now we have Anne Curtis sporting a velvet bow—an iconic one at that. This is just one of the nostalgic hair accessories that have become trendy in the past couple of years. If you remember, barrettes, claw clips, and scrunchies have had their moment, too.

Is 2019 the year of the Audrey Hepburn velvet bow and other pieces similar to it? Let us know if you’re digging the trend or not.
