The fashion industry is greatly criticized for being a large contributor to the world’s waste. But fortunately, it seems brands are taking concrete steps to address this issue. Even luxe labels are now taking part in the movement.
Case in point: Prada has just launched a project, Re-Nylon, that introduces a sustainable line of Prada bags made using regenerated nylon, which they call ECONYL®.
Made in partnership with textile yarn producer Aquafil, “ECONYL® nylon is obtained through the recycling and purification process of plastic waste collected from oceans, fishing nets, and textile fibre waste.” According to the brand, the material “can be recycled indefinitely, with no loss of quality.”
Additionally, a percentage of proceeds from the sale of the Prada Re-Nylon capsule will reportedly go to UNESCO’s initiative focused on “developing educational activities that involve students from several countries to implement dedicated lesson plans using plastic and circular economy topics to inspire learners.” This educational program is supposedly “built around two axes—learning and take action—and one of the outcomes will be an awareness raising campaign designed by the students.”
Re-Nylon’s ultimate goal is to convert all Prada virgin nylon into regenerated nylon ECONYL® by the end of 2021, according to Prada.
It’s definitely an ambitious project and we commend Prada for taking it on. Hopefully other labels will follow suit.
