Rajo Laurel is bringing post-apocalyptic Victorian English to ‘Sweeney Todd’

Sweeney Todd in Manila is premiering in October, but theater fans are already excited after finding out music icons Lea Salonga and Jett Pangan are starring in the play. But if you haven’t gotten tickets for any of the shows yet, here’s another reason for you: The costumes will be designed by Rajo Laurel.

“I am extremely excited to be designing the costumes for this incredible musical. I love the brand new directions it’s going,” Rajo said in a statement. “Post-apocalyptic new wave Victorian English romantic has always been special to me. This was how I used to dress up when I was a teenager.”

This isn’t the first time Rajo has designed costumes for an Atlantis Theatrical musical. He worked on looks for The Rocky Horror Show and Dream Girls. He also noted that theater has influenced him as a designer. “I grew up in theater. It is the reason why I became a designer. The power of clothes and costume is so palpable in theatre. I love how you can tell stories with clothes,” he said.

Sweeney Todd will run from Oct. 11 to 27 at the Theatre at Solaire. Tickets are now on sale at Ticketworld’s outlets and website.
