Puffer jackets are out, puffer bags are in

You’ve heard of puffer jackets. Now, get ready for “puffer” bags.

These accessories were first spotted during New York Fashion Week last February where attendees were carrying oversized purses with padded surfaces. One popular choice was the Glam Slam Bag from Maison Margiela, which Vogue called “pillow purses” in 2017. The fashion house recently came out with new designs for their fall/winter 2019 line.

You could say that puffer bags are pieces that have disappeared and re-appeared multiple times in the fashion world. Purse Blog noted that Chanel released a Coco Cocoon collection in 2010 which featured these pieces. “From a functional standpoint, the bags do have their advantages, especially for travel: they’re lightweight, frequently made of durable types of textile like nylon, and the puffy texture can help smooth out poking edges from things like laptops or hardback books in, say, an airplane carry-on,” the blog stated. “The look also feels vaguely sporty, which incorporates a huge fashion trend that designers have so far had trouble make work in the bag market.”

If you’re looking to get your own in different sizes, check out our picks below.

Maison Margiela Glam Slam Bag

The Glam Slam Bag comes in various sizes. This one in particular is one of their bigger totes which has round top handles and adjustable and detachable shoulder straps. The material is made from supple leather that creates the padded effect on the bag. If you’re not into this bold red shade or the size, they come in more options. Available on Farfetch.

H&M Quilted Weekend Bag

WhoWhatWear listed down some “controversial” oversized bag trends wherein some of them have puffy details on them. This one from H&M is similar to the ones they mentioned. It’s made from polyester, big enough to be a weekend bag or travel carry-on, and it’s in a fun light purple shade. Available at SM Makati.

Emporio Armani Padded Puffer Bag

Emporio Armani’s oversized bag reminds us so much of an actual puffer jacket. It’s oversized and it has top handles (which are also padded) and a shoulder strap with the brand’s logo all over it. Maybe it can double as a pillow if you bring this to the airport. Available online.

Dries Van Noten Quilted Sateen Tote

Do you love eye-catching yellow pieces? You’re in luck because this marigold tote from Dries Van Noten is right up your alley. The texture is said to feel soft and comfortable when you carry it. Since it’s a big and functional piece, you can bring this to work or while you’re on-the-go on the weekends. Available on Net-a-Porter.

Zara Quilted Maxi Crossbody Bag

Here’s another bright yellow bag, this time from Zara. The quilted exterior adds the soft padded texture on the bag itself and the handles. It also comes with a chain crossbody strap and a magnetic clasp closure. You can also get it in other colors including black, beige, and dark blue. Available at Power Plant Mall.

Valextra Reversible Mini Puffer Bag Jacket

If you want to make any of your small handbags puffy anytime, get this jacket from Valextra. The padding is made from goose down and feather filling, just like any puffer jacket. It’s also reversible so you can choose from red and navy to go with your bag. This accessory is useful during the rainy season as as it will keep your bags dry. Available on Matches.

BONUS: Urban Sophistication The Puffer Case

Guess what? You can also add a puff to your iPhone! Urban Sophistication’s The Puffer Case is soft and adds a unique touch to your phone. Right now, it only comes in black, but the brand is open to adding more colors. Available online.
