Kelly Clarkson’s ovarian cyst rupture is a reminder to visit our OB-GYNE

When I was 16, doctors found two cysts in my ovaries which had to be surgically removed because they might burst and cause more reproductive problems. So you could just imagine the horror and concern I felt when I heard that Kelly Clarkson’s ovarian cyst burst while filming The Voice.

In an interview with People, Kelly shared had two consecutive health scares. She first had an appendectomy hours after hosting the Billboard Music Awards last May. A week later, she felt an excruciating pain on the set of The Voice, where she’s a judge. “Blake [Shelton] was talking to me and all of the sudden, everything he said just went away and I had to grab his arm and I was like, ‘Something is wrong,'” she said.

The singer immediately went to the ER to have herself checked. Fortunately, the doctors didn’t find any complications and she’s back to work. But the back-to-back hospital trips did freak her out a little, saying, “I was hysterically laughing and crying at one point in the ER like ‘What is happening?’ Thankfully, I’m great now. I’m totally great now.”

When women have ovarian cysts, it usually requires pain management and tracking in hopes of it disappearing after some time. (In my experience, it was through injectable contraceptives pre-operation.) However, surgery is also an option when it’s gotten too big and close to rupturing. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center’s health encyclopedia, a ruptured cyst can cause pain and bleeding, and in some cases, early menopause.

To prevent any complications, be sure to go to your OB-GYNE regularly and have yourself checked if you feel any pelvic pain or observe anomalies during your period. It’s better that you spot an ovarian cyst early so you can start treatment ASAP and avoid sudden bursts.
