“Mega” founder Sari Yap passed away last night after battling ovarian cancer. The publication made the announcement on Facebook.
“Just as the heavens are draped in an overcast of gray, with rains threatening to fall as if [they] were tears above, it is with a heavy heart we mourn the passing of our founder and guiding light, Sari Yap, who peacefully joined our creator at 2:07 AM today, in the presence of her family who survives her,” the post read.
Sari founded the magazine in 1991 and was the CEO and editor-in-chief. In a 2012 interview on GMA’s “Powerhouse,” she told Mel Tiangco she took a chance at creating the first glossy fashion magazine in the country because she wanted to “impact the lifestyle of society in a positive way and showcase the best of the Filipino to the world.”
Even though the company lost millions during the early years, she didn’t give up and slowly grew the fashion magazine by “creating a larger market of advertisers.” Now, the One Mega Group has a total of 10 titles.
Many of Sari’s colleagues and friends have shared their fond memories with her. Current “Mega” editor-in-chief Peewee Reyes-Isidro dedicated an Instagram post to her. “Thank you for teaching me the value of [hard work.] Thank you for being the gold standard. Thank you for being an inspiration. Thank you for driving us to be the best version of ourselves. You will forever be missed. My mentor and my friend- you will always be cherished. Farewell,” she wrote.
