This year’s Emmy Awards was filled with surprises. The show had viewers questioning why Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” didn’t get more awards than it deserved. Same with “Game of Thrones” stars Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie, and Emilia Clarke, who all didn’t win their respective categories. But I digress.
On the red carpet, stars didn’t wear the usual color palette like black, white, or nude. Instead they went for the bright and bold route, even combining unexpected colors that worked so well. Even if they didn’t win any awards, their ensembles still caught everyone’s attention in the best way possible.

Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore wore a pink and red Brandon Maxwell off-shoulder gown which had a thigh-high slit. She’s just one of the many ladies who opted for this color combo.
Susan Kelechi Watson
“This Is Us” star Susan Kelechi Watson also wore an off-shoulder red and blush pink dress like her co-star, Mandy Moore. (They also have a twinning photo!) Only this one is designed by Badgley Mischka from his spring/summer 2020 collection.
Taraji P. Henson
Taraji P. Henson opted for a flowy Vera Wang gown. It had a pink shirt and a red floor-length cape. The power this ensemble has!
Dasha Polanco
“Orange Is the New Black” and “When They See Us” star Dasha Polanco looked like a Barbie doll in her white Christian Siriano dress with pink puffed sleeves and a tulle ribbon around her waist. She completed the look with drop earrings and a high ponytail.
Gwendoline Christie
The “Game of Thrones” star channeled her badass knight character, Brienne of Tarth, in this red, white, and gold Gucci number. She looks like an actual saint, you guys.
Jameela Jamil
Our favorite feminist of 2019, “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil arrived in a mint green Monique Lhuillier princess gown. If you thought she looked like Princess Jasmine in this outfit, you’re not alone because she thought so too.
Greta Lee
Slime green is still not going out of style. “Russian Doll” star Greta Lee wore a two-piece pleated ensemble by Christopher John Rogers.
Regina King
Regina King wore a baby blue Jason Wu gown which was a revamped version of a spring 2013 piece. According to the designer, the dress was embroidered with tiny clear sequin and caviar beads.
Carice van Houten
The Red Priestess of “Game of Thrones” arrived in a multicolored Ronald van der Kemp creation made with hand-painted silk. The ensemble is long-sleeved and contains the stars and stripes of the US flag on the skirt; it’s also a sustainable piece.
Lena Headey
Could you imagine Queen Cersei wearing anything that’s not red or black? Well, Lena Headey went for a playful floral gown from Brock Collection. It has ruffle details on the sleeves and the waist area, topped off with a long black ribbon at the front.
MJ Rodriguez
Another star who wore pink was “Pose” star and Emmy Awards first-timer MJ Rodriguez. She wore a fuchsia Jason Wu silk shantung gown with black bow details on the sides and low V-neck.
Zendaya
Zendaya’s love affair with thigh-slit gowns continue with this dark green Vera Wang piece. Show off dem legs, girl!
Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox not only brought a rainbow clutch to go with her ruffled Monsoori gown, she also had a message engraved on it. In a close-up shot, you’ll see the words “Oct. 8. Title VII. Supreme Court.” This pertains to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which “prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and nation origin,” but does not cover sexual orientation. So Laverne’s colorful accessory is basically a call to action and we are living for it.
