We’re power-suiting up at work thanks to ‘The Politician’

THE POLITICIAN

“The Politician” is now considered one of the most stylish shows of the year. Apart from being an entertaining look at the behind-the-scenes of a political campaign (in this case, a high school presidential election), viewers are mostly talking about how the characters are dressed.

Costume designer Claire Parkinson said in a WhoWhatWear UK Instagram Q&A that she based the looks on the characters’ personalities. For McAfee Westbrook (Laura Dreyfuss), she’s always in suits to show how serious she is in helping with Payton Hobbart’s (Ben Platt) campaign. While Alice Charles (Julia Schlaepfer) is dressed in pastels to match her dainty demeanor, plus the pieces were inspired by Jackie O.

In the span of eight episodes, we saw how serious these students are wearing their power suits and designer accessories to school. So we scoured for similar pieces inspired by the show that we can wear to work.

Suistudio Cameron Pinstripe Wool Suit Jacket

Nothing but respect for my president

Payton, who’s running for student body president, is always seen in sharp suits in various colors. One of his iconic ensembles includes a dark blue pinstripe blazer he wore during a debate with his rival River Barkley (David Corenswet). We found a similar piece that you can use for any corporate event.

Available on Nordstrom.

River Island Polly No Popper Blazer

The best hype people

If you’re looking for a more vibrant option, take cues from McAfee who likes monochromatic suits. During a campaign meeting in the library, she wears a peach orange coord with a loose-fitting blazer made from a light fabric. This one from River Island is made from polyester, has folded sleeves, and doesn’t have buttons so you can wear it over casual tops as well.

Available on Zalora PH.

Gap Textured Marled Crewneck Pullover Sweater in Light Blue Marl

“Here’s how you’re going to get the vote…”

Alice, who is Payton’s girlfriend and campaign manager, often wears a preppy look in preparation for her potential role as “student body First Lady.” One look includes a white top with a light blue bow around the neck, complete with a blue sweater tied around her shoulders. The latter isn’t just an accessory, it can also come in handy when it gets chilly.

Available at Central Square.

Perle Short Necklace with Swarovski and Boule Rhinestone

Also inspired by Alice, she wears a stack of pearl necklaces at a funeral. Just buy a bunch of them and place them on top of each other if you want to add a statement element to any outfit.

Available on Boccadamo.

Chanel Pre-Owned 1986-1988 Logo Patch Shoulder Bag

[Ice-cold stare]
Astrid Sloan (Lucy Boynton) is stoic, ambitious, and loves her luxury items. In one episode, she’s carrying a Chanel logo bag to go with her tweed dress. We found a similar bag with the same double C logo and a crossbody chain strap.

Available on Farfetch.

H&M Pussybow Blouse in Powder Pink

Georgina Hobbart quote without context: “Please don’t jump out a window.”

Who can forget Georgina Hobbart (Gwyneth Paltrow)? Payton’s mom always looks refined even when she’s just painting portraits at home. But during a meeting with a lawyer, she wears a pussy bow piece reminiscent of Melania Trump’s top during the US presidential debate. Instead of a fuchsia blouse, Georgina is wearing a powder pink capelet with a bow around the neck. But you can still cop a blouse of the same color to dress like her.

Available at Greenbelt 3.
