2019 in review: Outrageous beauty trends that turned heads

Every year, there’s at least one person or group who comes up with creative beauty trends. They can either be doable for everyday makeup looks, or just meant for Instagram purposes. Other times, these trends can become so outrageous that you question why they even exist.

Since 2019 is about to end, we decided to list down some of the standout beauty trends we encountered throughout the year.

Bratz challenge

Several beauty influencers on YouTube and Instagram took on the challenge and transformed themselves into life-size Bratz dolls. Not only did they over-line their lips to create the dolls’ signature pout, they also drew on big, exaggerated eyes. It’s a great homage to the ladies who did Instagram makeup way before the app was invented.

AI makeup

Last February, Dazed Beauty used artificial intelligence software Beauty_GAN to do Kylie Jenner’s cover shoot makeup. Although the looks weren’t perfect and Kylie’s features were distorted, the photos were still pretty. This software also made us aware of the potential of AI in makeup, which is both amazing and creepy.

Toenail art

We noticed this trend on Instagram when nail artists from countries like South Korea and Taiwan started posting photos of bedazzled toenails. We have a feeling this will still be big in 2020 because who doesn’t want cute pedicures?

Fashion monogram face

Yahoo! Lifestyle noted that monogram makeup looks were everywhere on Instagram. What beauty influencers did was they drew on the logos of popular fashion brands like Louis Vuitton on their face.

Tattooed freckles

Many people love drawing fake freckles on the bridge of their noses using eyeliner. Meanwhile, there are those who went the extra mile and got freckle tattoos. We’ve seen beauty influencers do this using henna, but Byrdie published a story on how cosmetic tattoo artists would use hand-poked methods to give customers freckles.

Glitter pumpkin butt

Aside from badass costume makeup, we also got glitter pumpkin butts last Halloween. This was started by cosmetic brand Go Get Glitter, who thought it was a good idea to draw a pumpkin on your bum.
