We are slightly creeped out by the potential of AI makeup

On this episode of AIs possibly taking over the world: There’s now a software that can do your hair makeup by gathering 17,000 trendy looks on social media. This was used on Kylie Jenner for Dazed Beauty’s latest feature.

According to the publication, Kylie only had minimal makeup so that Beauty_GAN, the AI makeup software, would easily place the looks on her face. What it does is it’s able to determine if a photo is a beauty look or not. It then segregates them and utilizes the makeup elements on the subject. It’s equal parts useful and creepy.

Let’s start with the perks. Imagine if you need to take a photo but don’t have time to glam up. This will come in handy for when you want to look nice in selfies without the hassle of applying makeup.

Obviously, Beauty_GAN isn’t perfect yet based on Kylie’s looks, which are sometimes distorted (but still look like a painting). When it’s fully developed, it can do the perks we mentioned above but also possibly replace actual makeup artists for magazine shoots and editorials.

There’s also a chance that once we use AI software to do our makeup, it might create impossible beauty standards. The feeling of not looking like the AI-generated photo might make us feel insecure, worsening the problem that we’re all trying to break in this lifetime. It’s like everyone’s obsession with Zepeto again minus the cartoon avatar.

If you’re creeped out by the prospect of AI makeup, just know that it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and it’s becoming a growing trend. There are even augmented reality (AR) makeup apps now that let you test out products without going to physical stores.

But technology is getting advanced and the inventions are more innovative now, so it’s only a matter of time before AI takes over our everyday lives, including our makeup looks.

As much as it’s easy, it’s possible we’ll lose the gratification of holding makeup and swatching them on our hands. Also, admit it, even though it’s laborious to apply makeup on your face, there’s something soothing and fun in seeing your look come to life step by step. Plus, it can help boost people’s moods and ease their anxiety, too.
