Punk and grunge makeup rocked NYFW in the best way

It’s all about the dark side during the just-concluded New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Models for designer labels like Christian Siriano, Rodarte, Anna Sui and Dion Lee were seen rocking vampy lips, smokey eyes and faux piercings.

You know what this means? Punk rock and grunge beauty looks may become more popular this year. But first, let’s talk about the similarities between the two styles.

According to Allure, the rise of punk rock beauty and fashion began in the ’70s. Women took notes from the androgynous styles of icons like Joan Jett (who’s known for her strong eye makeup) and Patti Smith.

The makeup looks also differed depending on a country or city’s punk culture. In the US, women had tousled hair and wore minimal to no makeup. In London, women and men alike drew colorful geometric shapes on their faces à la David Bowie.

Meanwhile, grunge makeup was inspired by the punk and goth scene of the early ’90s. It was all about wearing darker lipstick and veering away from shimmer to look “unpolished” and going against what was considered conventionally pretty. Think Courtney Love with her black eyeliner and deep red lipstick.

This year, many are still doing punk and grunge looks, adding their own spin to them. Refinery29 even described some of the NYFW looks as “Birds of Prey“-inspired because of the Harley Quinn-esque heart stamps. If you’re looking for pegs, you can follow these accounts.

Heather Baron-Gracie

Pale Waves vocalist Heather Baron-Gracie’s signature look is a heavily lined eye, red eyeshadow and a dark plum lip. Most of the time, she rocks her natural curls in pigtails or just leaves them disheveled.

Taylor Momsen

After playing Jenny Humphrey in “Gossip Girl,” Taylor Momsen became the vocalist of The Pretty Reckless. Her go-to stage look are black raccoon-like eyes and a nude lip to go with her grungy outfits.

Meg Benitez

Instagram beauty microinfluencer Meg Benitez’s makeup looks range from vibrant to whimsical and glittery. Recently, she’s been doing smokey eye looks, sharp cat-eye wings, heart stamp freckles topped off with a neutral lipstick shade.

Eugenia Cooney

YouTuber Eugenia Cooney made a massive comeback on the platform after Shane Dawson made a mini-documentary about her. She mostly posts makeup videos where she tries out new products sent to her. Although she plays with bright eyeshadows a lot, she’s more comfortable packing on dark eyeshadow to match her jet black hair.
