NYFW 2019 brims with big, bold beauty looks

The variety found in collections ranged from simple monotones to loud color clashes, but what New York Fashion Week didn’t hold itself back on are beauty looks. Big, bold, and daring makeup and hairstyles graced the runways of New York City.

From vibrant eyeshadows, big hairdos, face jewelry, and daring but classic graphic liners, a lot of drama reigned as different fashion labels showcased various collections all over the city. Extravagant looks were inspired by numerous concepts and the artistry behind the glitz and glam that fashion week holds. As designers and stylists preview their work for the Spring and Summer of 2020, we will see more of our favorite looks off the runway.

Here are some of our top beauty picks from this year’s fashion week.

Area

Did anyone say face jewelry? Area’s top-to-toe necklace motif was the ultimate showstopper. Models were bedazzled with stunning face jewelry that framed the eyes, lips, cheeks, and nose by makeup artist Kanako Takase—complementing the couture line and gladiator footwear of this year’s collection.

Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung is one with nature this year. From florals to feathers, earth tones to greenery, the collection centered on elemental surroundings while a flower bouquet hairdo stole the show. The Nepalese-American designer incorporated his inclination for activism in his aesthetic through a kaleidoscope of colors, opulent patterns, multidimensional textures, and striking silhouettes.

Pyer Moss

Makeup artist Daniel Salstrom created the absolute Rock-and-Roll fantasy with makeup at Pyer Moss. “We’re marrying that world of glam rock and really celebrating the ‘70s peacocking [style] — like, ‘this is my moment, and I’m going to go out there,'” he tells “Allure.” This diffused, blended-out shimmery, sparkly, metallic eye look was one of our favorite looks from the show, created with Swarovski crystals.

Mansur Gavriel

While keeping the collection simple and sweet for this year’s show, artistic and monochromatic eye looks were the center of attention in Mansur Gavriel’s runway. Hairstylists enhanced the natural texture of the models’ tresses. Most makeup looks were inspired by outdoor elements such as the rays of the sun and clouds on a blue sky—looking like paintings on canvas.

Tomo Koizumi

Tomo Koizumi showcased a more euphoric look that complements his vibrant new collection. Editorial hairstylist and Redken global creative director Guido Palau created cone-like structures on models’ heads while Pat McGrath layered pigmented swathes of glitter in geometric swipes across the eyes.

Vfiles

Graphic liners are here to stay. Vfiles is all about the youth, so it makes sense that one of the biggest spectacles of the show was the playful makeup, which included painted eyebrows, glittery lids, and neon cat-eyes fit for Hunter Schafer’s “Euphoria“ character Jules.

Laurence and Chico

Laurence Li and Chico Wang, the design duo behind Laurence & Chico, are famous for bringing fantasy to life on the runway. For this year’s show, the makeup team did exactly that by using the same Face Lace eye accessories used in an episode of “Euphoria” on models. A coincidence? We think not.

Susan Alexandra

Hand bags are now officially hair accessories, at least according to Susan Alexandra. Her elaborately beaded fruit and animal print creations are her most well-known pieces, and models definitely strutted them all over—as tops, jewelry, and even as hair accessories. It was a fruity, colorful, and fun-filled aesthetic.
