After “Gossip Girl”s original producer Joshua Safran announced that the reboot’s cast would be diverse back in November, we’re finally getting a glimpse of who’s going to be in it.
The reboot is said to be set years after the original website went dark. It’s supposed to depict modern social media in New York, which would show the difference between having a Gossip Girl then and now.
Deadline reports that the cast consists of Tavi Gevinson, Thomas Doherty, Adam Chanler-Berat, Zión Moreno and Emily Alyn Lind.
During his last interview with Vulture, Safran mentioned how he was the only gay writer when the original series aired. “Even when I went to private school in New York in the ’90s, the school didn’t necessarily reflect what was on ‘Gossip Girl.’ So, this time around the leads are non-White. There’s a lot of queer content on this show,” he said.
Aside from casting a Venezuelan trans woman (Moreno) and a Scottish man (Doherty), there isn’t much diversity when it comes to race. Majority of the announced leads such as Gevinson, Chanler-Berat and Lind are all White, contrary to his statement that the leads will be non-White.
