It looks like Ms. England 2019 Bhasha Mukherjee has decided to continue serving others as a doctor as she flies back home to England to help out at Pilgrim Hospital. She made this decision after hearing stories from her former colleagues about the situation at the Eastern UK hospital.
Back in December 2019, Mukherjee took a break from her budding career as a doctor to represent England in the Miss World pageant. She’s also been tapped by multiple charities to be their ambassador. According to CNN, Mukherjee initially planned to hang her stethoscope until August this year for the charities.
Along with these charities, she’s been going around India for four weeks since the start of March to distribute stationeries to schools and even donate money to a home for abandoned girls.
And as the pandemic continues and the situation at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Eastern UK worsens (according to some of the beauty queen’s former colleagues), Mukherjee informed the hospital of her plans to return and serve. “I felt a sense of this is what I’d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now,” she told CNN.
As of writing, a total of 48,000 cases and 5,000 deaths have been recorded in the UK. Mukherjee is currently self-isolating for about two weeks before she can start working in Pilgrim Hospital again. She specializes in respiratory medicine, but it’s possible to be rotated as deemed necessary by the hospital.
We’re hopeful that other capable non-practicing health professionals would also consider going back to serving in these trying times. Mukherjee is just one of the few influential figures that have been extending help amid the pandemic. Let’s all try to help as well, especially since teamwork makes the dream work (and right now, the dream is to stop the pandemic from further spreading).
