Heads up: Here’s a webinar on safe abortions during the pandemic

The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) will be holding a webinar on safe abortion in the midst of pandemic, this coming May 27. Moderated by WGNRR executive director Marevic Parcon, the webinar will feature speakers Clara Rita Padilla, the executive director of Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network-Pinsan, an organization dedicated to achieving the full realization of women’s human, sexual and reproductive rights, Sivananthi Thanenthiran, the executive director of The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW).

Other speakers will be coming from WGNRR-Africa, Beyond Beijing Committee and PROMSEX.

Abortion remains illegal and extremely prohibited in the Philippines. According to Article II Section 12 of the constitution, “The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception.”

Individuals who willingly terminate their pregnancies or consent to someone else doing it for them will be imprisoned. Medical professionals and midwives who take part or assist in abortions will also be penalized. Pharmacists who dispense abortives may be fined P1,000.

The webinar is free for all, although participants have to sign up here or by scanning the post’s official QR code.
