Keeping up with Kylie: Are we really surprised with the Bangladeshi issue?

As the upcoming launch of her new collaboration with Kendall Jenner draws near, Kylie Jenner faces accusations on her allegedly not paying Bangladeshi workers for the services they rendered. This prompted to support these workers by calling out the Jenner siblings to pay them.

On June 21, the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner family posted the collaboration’s first teaser on her Instagram account. In the comments section, many questioned her about the Bangladeshi-made garments she and Kendall ordered for their clothing line but refused to pay for.

The issue first surfaced when Global Brands Group CEO Rick Darling admitted that their brands, including Kendall + Kylie, have cancelled their clothing orders for their Spring/Summer 2020 collection. “Given the unpredictability of the situation, our retail partners have cancelled orders, and existing inventory and product in production may have no sell-through,” wrote Darling in March.

According to Remake, an organization who aims to put a stop to fast fashion, the siblings’ brand Kendall + Kylie “refused to pay its garment suppliers for orders produced in February and March following a drop in sales caused by the coronavirus pandemic.” Many started rallying behind Bangladeshi workers by making the #PayUp petition trend.

Upon checking the petition page, it is revealed that more brands are guilty of not paying their suppliers. Among those mentioned are FashionNova, Forever21, Gap and Mothercare. They also listed the brands that promised to pay for their cancelled orders (which they’ll be monitoring) like Nike, Under Armour, H&M and Lululemon.

Twitter user Ishan tweeted screenshots of other people’s Instagram showing how the Jenner siblings’ accounts were deleting the negative comments on their promotional photos. As of  this writing, the comments on  Kylie’s Instagram post are turned off and Ishan was forced to take down his tweet due to legal technicalities.

In the past, Kylie was accused of allegedly exposing her cosmetics factory employees to deplorable working conditions. Hopefully this lets her rethink how she’s running her brands.
