Anthill Fabric Gallery once again lives up to its mission as a social enterprise dedicated to bringing the spotlight on Indigenous livelihood seekers. On Aug. 6, the community-centered brand launched its summer 2020 collection called “Paraluman.” It’s the first collection to be modeled by and named after three of the weavers themselves.
“Paraluman” is a showcase and a celebration of weaves from three communities. It features Argao stripes and zero waste weaves, Yakan Tennun Sinaluan and Bungasama weaves as well as abaca silk from Antique. The collection is an ode to the brand’s muse and inspiration: the mother weavers.
Anthill co-founder, managing and creative director Anya Lim shares with us, “Argao weavers Sheila, Leila and Robella were all-natural in front of the camera as they are behind the loom. They were stunningly beautiful and beaming with pride as they modeled their very own creations. More than just a perfect photograph, these are captured moments that signify ownership of culture, pride for identity and value for our talents. We are so proud of them.”
Included in the collection is The Takliad Top, a linen-blend wrap around with flow bell sleeves. It has a flattering v-neckline in a Yakan Sinaluan accent that elevates its feminine silhouette.
Another eye-catching piece is the Maria Cacao Blouse which is a contemporary take on the barong. The use of Yakan adds a contrasting element to the structured piece while complimenting with the puffed sleeves. The design retains a strong feminine flair despite the ornamental restraint.
Our personal favorite is the Abaca Lantoy Blouse. Fashioned from abaca silk from Antique, the modern traje de mestiza is bold but unmistakably feminine.
